Diocese of Same – Same Health Center and Medical Volunteer Project

Diocese of Same includes over 450,000 inhabitants in the districts of Same and Mwanga. Currently, the local healthcare facilities suffer from serious shortages of staff, equipment, and infrastructure. The available ambulances are few and often unreliable, making it difficult to manage emergencies and patient transfers to the nearest hospital, located in Moshi, about two hours away. Additionally, road conditions—especially during the rainy season—further worsen the situation.

To address these urgent needs, Fondazione SAME supports the Diocese through the construction of a Health Centre aimed at strengthening the local healthcare system, relieving regional hospital overcrowding and ensuring immediate care to the community.

The new Health Centre, currently under construction, will include:

– a maternity ward

– a neonatology and neonatal intensive care unit

– diagnostic laboratories

– medical imaging services

The project will also be supported by medical volunteer activities, involving Italian doctors and healthcare professionals who will periodically travel to the area, working together with the local staff and contributing to training and the improvement of clinical practices.
